Requirements for Getting Started

Make sure The Schema free theme is compatible with your WordPress version.

The Schema theme will work with 4.5 and above versions of WordPress.

However, for the best experience, added features, and updated security patches, we recommend you to update your WordPress to the latest version.

If you haven’t downloaded WordPress already, you can download it from the WordPress repository via https://wordpress.org/download/.

Checklist for Getting Started

  • Check WordPress Version and Update it
  • Install and Activate The Schema free theme
  • Install Necessary Plugins. Some functionality of the theme might not work if you do not install the recommended plugins.

Demo Import (Instantly Make Website Like Demo)

You can easily make your website exactly like the live preview (demo) of The Schema free theme by importing the demo content. Importing demo content is a great way of getting started with your website. You can get a guideline on how to set up this theme if you import the demo content.

To import the demo with a click, you need to install Rara One Click Demo Import plugin and follow this step by step guide.

How to Check and Update WordPress Version

  • Log in to the WordPress admin panel
  • Go to Dashboard >Updates

Theme Installation & Activation

After you have the latest version of WordPress, save the downloaded The Schema free theme somewhere handy on your computer, as you will be using the included files for the rest of the installation process.

The Schema theme file includes:

A WordPress Theme Files (in .zip format)— This (the-schema.zip) is a compressed WordPress theme file containing all of the required templates, images, and icons required for the theme to function properly.

Note for Safari users (macOS): If you are using Safari to download the theme file, the file may unzip automatically. So, make sure your theme file is in .zip format. Here’s how to stop Safari from automatically unzipping your .zip file.

To install and activate the theme follow these steps or the above gif:

  • Log in to WordPress Dashboard.
  • Go to Appearance > Themes

  • Click on Add New button

  • Click on Upload Theme

  • Click on “Choose File…”, select the “the-schema.zip” file from your computer and click Open.

  • Click Install Now

  • After the theme is installed, click on “Activate

Installing Recommended Plugins

You must install and activate the following plugins to get the best out of The Schema free theme.

RaraTheme Companion:

RaraTheme Companion is truly a must-have companion for your website. It provides  useful and frequently used widgets that you can add to the sidebars to create an engaging website. This plugin is necessary for adding home page sections on The Schema.

BlossomThemes Email Newsletter by Blossom Themes:

This plugin is needed to add a newsletter subscription form on the newsletter section. The plugin also creates a newsletter widget that can be used in the sidebars.

Regenerate Thumbnails by Alex Mills (Viper007Bond):

If you have existing content, this will help you update your image thumbnails sizes. To update the thumbnails, you must run this plugin.

How to Install Recommended Plugin:

  • Go to Appearance> Install Plugins

  • Click “Install” to install the plugins

  • Click “Activate” to activate the plugins

Setting Up the Front/Landing/Home Page

To get started with customizing the theme, you first may need to set up a front page. To make the theme look like the demo, you need to select the homepage display as a static page.

  • Log in to WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance>Customize > Default Settings >Homepage Settings (Static Front Page in earlier version of WordPress)
  • Select A static page under Your homepage displays
  • If you are using this theme in a fresh WordPress installation, go to next point. If you are using this theme in an old WordPress, choose the page you want to set home page as Homepage and choose the page you want to set as blog page as Posts Page.
  • Click Publish

Site Identity (Add Logo/Name and Tagline on your website)

You can change the name and logo of your website here.

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Site Identity
  • Click Select Logo and upload your logo.
  • Enter Site Title and Tagline.
  • Check Display Site Title and Tagline
  • Click Select Image and upload Image for Site Icon (favicon)
  • Click Save & Publish

Appearance Settings

You can change the background color and background image of your website from this setting.

Colors (Change Color of the Theme)

You can change the background color of the theme from here.

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Colors
  • Click on “Select Color” and select the background color.
  • Click Publish when you are satisfied.

Background Image

You can add a background image to your website from here.

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Appearance Settings > Background Image
  • Click on “Select image” button to add the background image.
  • Click on “Remove” to remove the image. Click on “Change image” to change the background image.
  • Choose the image preset, position, size, and other options as you like it.
  • Click Publish when you are satisfied.

Layout Settings

General Sidebar Layout

You can choose sidebar layouts for Page, Posts, and Default sidebar from this menu option.

To select a sidebar, please follow the below steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Layout Settings>General Sidebar Layout
  • Select the Page Sidebar layout, Post Sidebar Layout, and Default Sidebar Layout as per your desire
  • Click on Publish when you are satisfied

Front Page Settings

You can configure Banner section and other home page section of your website using this menu.

You can enable and configure to show a banner on the homepage using this setting.

To configure a banner on the homepage, please follow the given steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress dashboard
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Front Page Settings>Banner Section
  • Enable/Disable the Banner section (Blue is Enabled)
  • Upload the image you want to add in the banner section
  • Enter the newsletter shortcode and Newsletter short note to show the newsletter on banner section. The newsletter Short Note can be used to display a short message below the newsletter form.
  • Click on Publish when you are done

Setting up Newsletter

You need to have BlossomThemes Email Newsletter plugin installed and activated for this setting.

You can add subscription form on the newsletter section of your website from here. To add a newsletter, you need to create a newsletter first and copy & paste the newsletter shortcode.

You can Enable the Newsletter section from this menu and Paste the Shortcode to display the Newsletter.

Creating Newsletters

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to BlossomThemes Email Newsletter > Add New

  • Enter the title of the newsletter.
  • Select the options in the Field Settings. Select “Name and Email” if you want users to enter their Name and Email to subscribe to your newsletters, otherwise select “Email”.
  • Enter Name and Email placeholder.
  • Enter the label for the Submit button.
  • Enter Form note. The note will be displayed below the Title.
  • From the Appearance Settings, edit the appearance of the newsletter form
  • Copy the newsletter shortcode
  • Click on Publish to create the Newsletter

Configuring Newsletters on Banner

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Front Page Settings>Banner Section
  • Enable the Banner section (Blue is Enabled)
  • Upload the image you want to add in the banner section
  • Enter the Newsletter shortcode and Newsletter short note to show the newsletter on banner section
  • Click on Publish when you are done

Configuring Newsletters on Footer

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Widgets > Footer Newsletter
  • Click on “Add a Widget”

  • Select “BlossomThemes: Email Newsletter Widget” from the list of the widget.

  • Enter the title for the footer newsletter section.
  • Select the Newsletter form you want to display on the footer.
  • Enable GDPR and upload newsletter icon
  • Click Publish

About Section

You can add the description and images about you and your organization in this section to enhance your branding.

To add About section on the landing page, please follow the below steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Front Page Settings> About Section
  • Click on Add a Widget
  • Select on Rara: A Featured Page Widget from the list of widget

  • Enter the title and select the page you want to display in the About Section
  • Check the show featured image, show page title and show page full content if you wish to display them on the homepage
  • Enter the Read More text
  • Check the Show Read More option and open in the same tab
  • Click on Publish

Client Section

You can showcase your clients’ logo on the homepage using the client section option.

To add your client logo on the homepage, please follow the below steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Front Page Settings> Client Section
  • Click on Add a Widget
  • Select Rara: Client Logo

  • Enter the Title for the Client Section
  • Check on Display logo in black and white and Open in New Tab option
  • Click on Add Another Logo if you wish to add more clients logo on the homepage
  • Click on Publish when you are done

Service Section

You can showcase the services offered by you or your organization in this section.

To add different services offered by you or your organization, please follow the below steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Front Page Settings> Service Section
  • Click on Add a Widget
  • Add “Text” widget for service section title and “Rara: Icon Text” widget for content

  • Enter the title for the section in the Text widget
  • Enter the title and description of your service in the Rara: Icon Text widget and upload or select the icon for the service. Then, enter Read More text and link for the service details.
  • Click on “Add a Widget” and select “Rara: Icon Text” widget for adding services. We recommend you to add 3 or 6 services for best design.
  • Click on Publish

Blog Section

You can display the latest blogs on the homepage using this setting.

Please follow the below steps to configure blog section on homepage of your website

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >Front Page Settings>Blog Section
  • Enable the Blog Section (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enter the Blog Section title, Blog Section description and Read More label for the blogs.
  • Click on Publish when you are done

General Settings

You can configure header, social media, SEO, performance settings, and post settings from this option.

Header Settings

You can enable/disable the search button in the header using this setting

To enable/disable the search button in the header menu, please follow the below steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >General Settings>Header Settings
  • Enable/Disable the Header search button. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Click on Publish when you are done

Social Media Settings

You can add and show your social media account links on the footer using this setting. You can add up to 10 social media links in this theme.

To add your social media accounts on the footer, please follow the below setting:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >General Settings>Social Media Settings
  • Enable Social Media Links (Blue is Enabled)
  • Click on “Add New Links” to add a social link.
  • Enter the label and link for the social media. Click on “Add New Links” to add more social links
  • Click on Publish when you are done

SEO Settings

You can configure the SEO settings of your website using this setting.

To configure SEO setting, please follow the below steps:

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize >General Settings>SEO Settings
  • Enable Last Update Post Date to boost your SEO. Blue is enabled. When you enable this, Google can read the post updated date and index your latest content.
  • Click Publish

Post (Blog) & Pages Settings

You can manage single post page settings like an excerpt, related posts, and other single post settings. To configure the blog post and pages, please follow the given steps:

  • Log in to WordPress Admin Panel
  • Go to Appearance > Customize > General Settings > Posts (Blog) & Pages Settings
  • Enable Blog Excerpt if you want to show the summary of the posts. Blue is enabled. If enabled, select the number of words for the blog excerpt and read more text
  • Define the Excerpt length.
  • Enter the Read More text
  • Enable/Disable the Hide author section. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enable/Disable Show related posts. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enter the Section Title for related posts
  • Enable/Disable Hide category. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enable/Disable Hide Post Author. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enable/Disable Hide posted date. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Click Publish

Performance Settings

You can Enable performance settings to make your website load fast. You have options to enable/disable following performance metrics.

  • Lazy Load featured image
  • Lazy Load Content Images
  • Lazy Load Gravatar
  • Enable combined Jquery

To change the Performance Settings

  • Log in to the WordPress Admin Panel.
  • Go to Appearance > Customize > Performance Settings
  • Enable Lazy Load to enables lazy loading of featured images. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enable Lazy Load Content Images to enables lazy loading of images inside page/post content. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enable Lazy Load Gravatar for lazy loading of gravatar. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Enable Combined Jquery to minify jquery library file. (Blue is Enabled)
  • Click Publish

Navigation Menus (Create and Edit Menu)

By default, all your primary pages will be displayed in the menu. If you want to create a Custom Menu, you can do it from Customizer or from Dashboard. This theme supports a single menu in the header. If you need more than one menu, you can add them in the sidebar using “Custom Menu” widget.

The Primary Menu Appears beside the site logo in the header.

Creating Menu via Customizer

  • Login to WordPress Dashboard
  • Go to Appearance > Customize>Menus
  • Click on Create New Menu

  • Give a name to your menu in Menu Name and select the menu location and click Next

  • Click “Add Items” to add items (pages, posts, categories, custom links…) to the Menu
  • Click “+” icon on the items list to add the item to the menu
  • Drag and Drop the added items to rearrange them
  • Click Publish

Create Menu from Dashboard

  • Login to your WordPress Dashboard
  • Go to Appearance > Menus in the WordPress Dashboard
  • Click on create a new menu.

  • Give a name to your menu in Menu Name and click Create Menu button.

  • Select the items from Pages, Posts, Custom Links, or Categories and click “Add to Menu”.

  • Drag and Drop the added items to rearrange them.
  • Check the Menu location to Primary
  • Click Save Menu

Widgets

You can add the widgets to the sidebar in two ways, either via Dashboard or Customizer.

Adding Widgets via Customizer

  • Login to your WordPress Dashboard.
  • Go to Appearance> Customize> Widgets
  • Make sure you are on the page you want to add widgets to.
  • Click on the desired Sidebar or location (the one you want to add widgets to). You can add widgets on Footer as well.
  • Click on Add a Widget to add widgets

  • Select desired Widgets and give a title to the widget
  • Click Add a Widget to add more widgets in the sidebar
  • Drag and reorder the widget as desired
  • Click Publish

Adding Widgets via Dashboard

  • Login to your WordPress Dashboard
  • Go to Appearance> Widgets
  • Available widgets are listed on the left-hand side while Sidebars are listed on the right side (including the sidebars you create)
  • Drag and drop the widgets to the desired sidebars.

Footer Section

The theme has 3 widgets area plus a newsletter section on the footer section. You can add various widgets to the area. To add widgets in the footer, go to Appearance> Customize>Widgets and select the Footer Location (footer one, two, three) and add the widgets.

Footer Credit Settings

You can edit the footer credit using this setting.

  • Login to your WordPress Dashboard
  • Go to Appearance> Customize> Footer Settings
  • Enter your desired footer credit text
  • Click Save & Publish when you are done.

Additional CSS

You can add extra CSS codes here. If you want to modify the color, fonts, or any other CSS effects, you can enter the code here.

  • Login to your WordPress Dashboard
  • Go to Appearance> Additional CSS
  • Enter your code
  • Click Publish when you are done

Helpful Tips

  • We highly recommend using Child Theme if you need to change the code of the theme. Do not change the codes in the files of the parent theme as all such changes will be lost when the theme is updated. Here’s an easy to follow guide if you don’t know how to create a child theme.
  • Always keep a BackUp of your theme before making any changes to the theme.
  • If you get any problem in using the theme, you can do the following things:
  • Deactivate the plugins, sometimes plugin conflict may cause issues with the theme. Please deactivate the unused plugins.
  • Replace the latest modified code with the original code.
